The studies themselves are not intended to be comprehensive or complete commentaries on the biblical passages, but rather a survey of the basic story line, a brief analysis on the features of the text that serve to communicate its message, and a summary of the theological communication of the passages as a basis for further reflection. That means that there will be a lot of interesting details of the biblical narratives that will not be directly considered.
Bibliography for the Study of Hebrews
Many sources have been used in the preparation of these lessons from Hebrews. The bibliographical information and a brief comment are given for the main sources.
Attridge, Harold W. The Epistle to the Hebrews, Hermeneia Commentary. Philadelphia: Fortress Press, 1989. This is a very technical commentary dealing with the Greek text and written for specialists.
Barclay, William. The Letter to the Hebrews, The Daily Study Bible Series. Philadelphia: The Westminster Press, 1957. Barclay is always interesting and relevant to spiritual growth. His work targets the lay audience.
Brown, Raymond. The Message of Hebrews. The Bible Speaks Today. Downers Grove: InterVarsity Press, 1982. This paperback has many useful insights into the message and application of Hebrews. Written for lay readers.
Bruce, F. F. The Epistle to the Hebrews, Rev. Ed., New International Commentary. Grand Rapids: Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Company, 1990. This is a very useful commentary with a great deal of historical and spiritual insight.
Ellingworth, Paul. Commentary on Hebrews. New International Greek Testament Commentary. Grand Rapids: Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Company, 1992. This is a quite technical commentary on the Greek text.
Ellingworth, Paul. The Epistle to the Hebrews. Epworth Commentaries. Oxford: Epworth Press, 1991. This small paperback has a great deal of historical and theological information that is helpful for understanding the text.
Hagner, Donald A. Hebrews. The New International Biblical Commentary. Peabody, MA: Hendrickson Publishers, 1990. This slender paperback provides a simple but quite useful commentary.
Jewett, Robert. Letter to Pilgrims: A Commentary on the Epistle to the Hebrews. New York: The Pilgrim Press, 1981. This is an unusual commentary that takes a very non-traditional view of authorship and audience. There is significant spiritual insight in some sections of Jewett's work.
Lane, William L. Hebrews: A Call to Commitment, Peabody, MA: Hendrickson Publishers, 1985. This small paperback has tremendous insight into the author's flow of thought. It is very helpful. (Referred to as Lane.)
Lane, William L. Hebrews. 2 vols. Word Biblical Commentary. Dallas: Word Books, Publishers, 1991. This is the most comprehensive modern commentary on Hebrews. It is technical but has material accessible to a lay reader.
Lindars, Barnabas. The Theology of the Letter to the Hebrews. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1991. This is not a commentary, but provides fascinating insight into the theological patterns at work in Hebrews.
Montefiore, H.W. A Commentary on the Epistle to the Hebrews. London: A.&C. Black, 1964. This commentary attempts to focus on the theological message of Hebrews. Occasionally helpful.
Stedman, Ray C. Hebrews. IVP New Testament Commentary Series. Downers Grove: InterVarsity Press, 1992. This exposition by a well-known pastor has many practical applications for the message of Hebrews.
Wiley, H. Orton. The Epistle to the Hebrews, Rev. Ed. Kansas City: Beacon Hill Press, 1984. This commentary is a significant resource for theological insight into Hebrews. Does not emphasize the historical situation.
Wilson, R. McLean. Hebrews. The New Century Bible. Grand Rapids: Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Company, 1987. This commentary tries to present Hebrews in a way that modern readers can apply it to their lives.
Wolcott, Leonard T. Hebrews. Cokesbury Basic Bible Commentary. Nashville: Cokesbury Publishing, 1988. This slender paperback provides in each section's summary contemporary applications of the passage. For lay readers.
