Incidents of Individuals Being
"Filled with the Holy Spirit" before the Day of Pentecost

The "infilling with the Holy Spirit", what we are calling the "Pentecostal experience" is a uniquely New Testament phenomenon. In the main, Old Testament believers experienced having the Holy Spirit "come upon" them. In the New Testament is a record of five individuals who were "filled with the Holy Spirit" prior to the Day of Pentecost, as record in Acts 2:4.

These five individuals were:
Mary, the mother of Jesus Although it is not specifically stated, Luke 1:35 certainly implies Mary was filled with the Holy Spirit. And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.

Elisabeth, the mother of John the Baptist

AND John the Baptist, himself, before he was born

And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost: (Luke 1:41)
Zacharias, the father of John the Baptist And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Ghost, and prophesied. (Luke 1:67)
Jesus, the Christ And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him:  And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Then was Jesus led up of the spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil. (Matt 3:16-4:1)
